An Open Call to Artists

In association with Live! Casino and Hotel, the Shreveport Regional Arts Council & Bossier Arts Councils have joined together to bring an arts opportunity to the SBC community full of chance and high stakes!

To celebrate the opening of Live! Casino & Hotel Louisiana, the latest neighbor of Bossier City’s recently rejuvenated East Bank Cultural District, together we are issuing an Open Artist Call to the artists of NWLA to help line these casino halls with fresh, local artwork!

For this Open Call, we want local artists to submit a concept that captures the spirit of Live! Casino & Hotel; Louisiana-based Gambling Glam, Big Wins, and a Vibrant Nightlife Experience!

Of the concepts submitted, 12 artists will be selected to create a finalized version to be displayed within the Casino & Hotel space and will be compensated $1000 for their work. Once complete, these pieces will officially go on display at Live! Casino and Hotel in the prefunction area of the Event Center - a 25,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art, multi-purpose venue for top name entertainment, meetings, conventions, non-profit and social gatherings. This Collection will be considered a long-term “permanent” installation.

The submission guidelines are as follows:

  • The artwork must be the artist’s original work; however, copies/prints of originals may be accepted.
  • Artist must be registered on Culturalyst Directory (https://nwla.culturalyst.com/)
  • Artist must be from Region 7 in Louisiana (Parishes to include:  Caddo, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne, Bienville, DeSoto, Red River, Sabine, Natchitoches.)

  • Open Artist Call Begins: August 12, 2024
  • Concept Deadline: Submitted by 4pm, September 13, 2024
  • Selected Artists to be notified: Beginning September 30, 2024

THE KAT ARTIST RESIDENCY for LITERARY, VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTISTS

Welcome to the tallest, smallest apartment for Artist Residencies: The Kallenberg Artist Tower (KAT)! Located at the Central ARTSTATION, the home of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council and center for the presentation, exhibition, performance, creation of, and education about the Arts, the KAT is located at 801 Crockett Street in Downtown Shreveport in the heart of Shreveport Common, destined to become the destination for UNexpected, Unprecedented, UNabashed, experiences that form an UNcommon Cultural Community.

The Shreveport Regional Arts Council offers an annual week-long “KAT” Residencies for Visual Artists and Performing Artists, and Literary Artists. This application is open exclusively to Artists who reside in Louisiana.

The selected Artists will be awarded a one-week Retreat/Residency in the KAT, with its unique architecture and historical significance. The apartment is fully equipped with a kitchen, 1.5 baths, a queen-sized bed, a living room, and a rooftop that provides a panoramic view of downtown Shreveport and the Shreveport Common neighborhood. Each floor of the KAT is a separate room: there are five floors and a rooftop. There is NOT an elevator. The stairs are quite manageable; however, each element of the space is on a different floor.

Selected Residency Artists not only benefit personally and professionally from the one-week residency, it will also benefit the Northwest Louisiana Arts community. Artists want to hear your thoughts and follow your career progress as well as learn a “how to” tip in one specific technique that you have mastered in order to increase the cadre of strategies for success! Therefore, the Shreveport Regional Arts Council provides each selected Artist-in-Residence a $500 stipend for the week with the caveat that the Artist will participate in a combined Artist Talk and Workshop that is both in-person and livestreamed across all SRAC social media platforms. The Artist-in-Residence will be given $400 upon their residency check-in, and the remaining $100 upon check-out. However, SRAC reserves the right to withhold the $100 if the KAT is damaged.

Travel expenses and meals are not included.

Animals are not allowed, unless they’re a certified service animal.

The KAT ARTIST Residency includes:

  1. One week - 6 nights (Sunday – Saturday; or negotiated with you) in the historic and restored five-story KAT apartment. (The Artist must be comfortable with stairs; the building has five floors and a stairwell to the rooftop. There is not an elevator.)
  2. A workshop focused on a specific topic geared to benefit the community of Northwest Louisiana area artists, along with an artist’s talk geared for the public that shares your creative journey.
  3. $500 stipend; $400 provided upon arrival and $100 payable upon departure.

Selection Process:

  1. Louisiana artists with an active profile on Culturalyst are eligible to apply.
  2. Application deadline is Monday, September 30, 2024, at 4:00 PM. Resident Artists for 2025 will be selected and announced at the December NWLA Artist Holiday Potluck.
  3. The selection process will be determined by an expert professional panel for each discipline. Note: Critics reserve the right not to select an Artist within a discipline.
  4. Artists may only apply once for one discipline.
  5. Competitive applicants will have samples of work that have been published, performed, or exhibited; works in progress; and an articulated goal for the Residency.
  6. Selected artists suggest the top three weeks in 2025 for their residency in the KAT Tower, and the Shreveport Regional Arts Council will confirm a mutually agreeable week with the selected Artists.

Application:

Artists complete the application below, including a statement about what they hope to achieve from a week-long residency, details about their proposed Artist Talk and Workshop, and Samples of Work.

The Selection Panel will review the Application and will go to your Louisiana Culturalyst Page to review your Samples of Work, your Resume/Bio, and your Artist’s Statement. You are welcome to update your Directory representation at any time prior to the application deadline.
